Our History
In February of 2010, while attending a training sponsored by the Texas New Mexico Hospice Organization (TNMHO), it became painfully clear that many chaplains have not had adequate access to clinical training. TNMHO supported a group of us chaplains, along with an adult educator, RN and regulatory expert, and a hospice physician in forming a committee to explore solutions.
After a year of surveys of hospice executive directors and chaplains, we launched a training curriculum that became so popular we were invited to present all over Texas and New Mexico. Then Colorado called, then Georgia, then Iowa, then the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, then MD Anderson, and the list goes on!
With the blessings of the group and TNMHO, I launched Carla Cheatham Consulting Group, LLC in 2012. We expanded the curriculum as SCIE (“sky”)—Spiritual Care, Integrity, & Excellence Curriculum and added 2- and 3-Day Intensives.
Nurses, physicians, social workers, bereavement counselors, volunteers and others began to attend and ask for even more topics around boundaries, compassion fatigue, communication, ethics, and presence with those who are suffering. So I added The Power of Presence Curriculum to address those requests.
I now travel the country full-time as a trainer and keynote speaker to equip and inspire professional caregivers of all disciplines from healthcare, mental health, and other fields. I speak about not only ethical spiritual care but also the emotional intelligence needed to be grounded and provide effective presence for all persons while avoiding compassion fatigue and ethical violations.
It’s been an amazing ride, and we’re just getting started. Sign up for my newsletter to stay up to date with speaking dates, book publications, and more! I’m glad you’re joining the journey.
Peace,
Carla
